Gregg Keizer covers Microsoft, security issues, Apple, Web browsers and general technology breaking news for Computerworld. Microsoft intends to support Windows XP SP3 until mid-April 2014. The latter, however, is not supported: Microsoft links IE updates to specific operating system editions, and there is no guarantee that one labeled for XP SP3 will work with the older service pack.Īlternatively, users can stop using Internet Explorer and turn instead to a rival browser, such as Mozilla's Firefox, Google's Chrome or Opera Software's Opera. But also on May 6, Microsoft delivered a new version of Internet Explorer 7, one tailored for the latest service pack for Windows XP.

A bug disclosed last week that can be exploited via IE - or any other browser - is not in IE, but in a Windows help component. Incremental updates to Internet Explorer, like those you might see on Patch Tuesday that correct small bugs or fix security issues, are always best received through Windows Update. However, there are no open Microsoft-issued IE security advisories. Microsoft could deliver an "out of band" patch before July 13 if an IE vulnerability popped up and the company hustled to craft and release a fix. The next IE fix probably won't appear until Aug. Microsoft fixed six IE flaws June 8 during this month's Patch Tuesday.

Unless Microsoft releases an emergency IE update in the next 31 days or deviates from its habit of issuing browser updates on alternate months, XP SP2 users have received their last IE patch. According to data from Qualys, about half of all enterprise PCs running Windows XP were still using SP2 as of late last month. However, it means that users still relying on Windows XP SP2 will be at risk for exploits of any IE vulnerability that Microsoft patches after July 13. The practice of linking browser patches to operating systems' support life cycles is a long-standing Microsoft policy.

"There is no differentiation for XP SP2 customers running IE."

Internet Explorer 8 is truly a giant step forward, and proves that Microsoft is working hard to offer a more secure, compatible and customizable browser."Customers will need to install XP SP3 in order to leverage the extended support (which includes security updates), which will run through April 2014," a Microsoft spokeswoman said in an e-mail reply to questions. As for security, Internet Explorer 8 includes the so-called SmartScreen filter, which prevents you from entering fraudulent websites and protects you from online phishing scams. While InPrivate Browsing is on, the browser won't save data, including cookies, history and temporary Internet files. Internet Explorer 8 includes InPrivate Browsing, Internet Explorer's version of the popular Chrome Incognito mode. Besides that, everything else is in place: the address bar is again on top of the interface, and Favorites are accessible via a drop-down menu. The interface of Internet Explorer 8 hasn't changed that much compared to older versions, except for one small detail the menu bar is back and shows up by default again. One of them, the ' Suggested sites' function, recommends new websites you may not know about, based on your browsing history. It comes in really handy for tracking small changes that can't be followed by RSS, without having to visit the site: online auction bids, stock exchange values, weather information and more.īesides these two tools, Internet Explorer 8 also includes many interesting new features. Regarding Internet Explorer's Web Slices, these are a kind of RSS-style tool that tracks changes and updates to selected websites and keeps you informed about them.
